Course Content

Course structure

The MBA programme is delivered in a ‘block format’, with 2 modules being covered every 6 weeks. Core module classes are inter-disciplinary - you study shared modules with master students from different business management specializations. Due to the rolling entry (6 times a year) groups are dynamic, extremely international, and diverse.

The modules are delivered intensively over consecutive days in the 'block format', which means that each module has 6 days of teaching, split into two blocks of 3 days. Teaching methods include group work, case studies, presentations, and live projects. The course is delivered through a variety of approaches including lectures, presentations, tutorials and case studies, with an emphasis on interactive learning. Each module is taught by two lecturers, often a full-time Wittenborg lecturer and a guest lecturer from a partner university. Modules also include regular guest speakers from the industry.

Areas of study

Management subjects address key issues of strategy, marketing, operations, human resources, accounting and financial planning, studied in parallel with deeper international corporate finance and investment modules. Options include consultancy and multi-unit management. Students acquire research skills, which they can apply to academic or industrial projects.

The Industry

The accounting industry is an essential pillar of the global economy, providing the framework through which organisations measure, process, and communicate financial information. It's a field characterised by its dynamic evolution, driven by regulatory changes, technological advancements, and shifting market demands. Here is an exploration of the critical aspects defining the accounting industry today, setting the stage for Wittenborg’s pecialised MBA programme in Accounting.

1. Regulatory Environment: The accounting industry is heavily influenced by international and local regulations that dictate financial reporting and compliance standards. Professionals in this field must navigate a landscape shaped by bodies such as the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). The industry requires leaders who not only understand these regulations but can also anticipate and adapt to regulatory changes to maintain compliance and uphold integrity in financial reporting.

2. Technological Advancements: Technology continues to redefine the scope and operation of accounting practices. Automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain are transforming traditional tasks such as data entry, reconciliation, and compliance into more efficient processes. This shift not only enhances accuracy and speeds up operations but also allows accounting professionals to focus on more strategic activities such as financial analysis, advisory services, and decision support.

3. Globalization: As businesses expand across borders, the need for accountants who can manage and report on financial activities in multiple jurisdictions increases. This requires a deep understanding of different financial and tax systems, foreign exchange risk management, and cross-border financial strategies. The global nature of business today calls for accounting professionals who are not only skilled in complex financial management but also culturally competent to navigate diverse business environments.

4. Sustainability and Ethics: There is a growing emphasis on sustainability within corporate governance. Accountants are increasingly called upon to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into financial reporting. This shift demands a new level of ethical accounting practices and a commitment to long-term value creation that benefits all stakeholders.

5. Risk Management: With the increase in financial complexity and the potential for economic instability, risk management has become a critical focus for the accounting industry. Professionals must have the skills to identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks, ensuring that organisations are safeguarded against potential financial crises.

6. Consulting and Advisory Services: Beyond traditional accounting roles, there is a significant trend towards providing strategic consulting and advisory services. Organisations seek accountants not only for compliance but also for advice on financial planning, business growth strategies, and performance optimisation.
