If you are searching for things to do in Apeldoorn in March by yourself or with friends, look no further! Here’s a guide featuring some of this month’s best attractions in the city:
A taste of Apeldoorn
The month gets off to a strong start with the Whisky Festival Apeldoorn, held on 1 and 2 March at Station Royaal (Stationsplein 4). Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just starting your journey into the world of whisky, there is something for everyone. The event is also an opportunity to meet writer and artist Ben Birdsall, author of two whisky-travel books, both published by Wittenborg University Press.
You can also enjoy whiskey – and other Irish delights – at Finnegan’s (Hoofdstraat 176) during Saint Patrick’s Weekend, from 14 to 17 March.
For those who love indulging in good food, Guusje Apeldoorn (Hoofdstraat 104) offers a Bottomless Brunch on 2 March from 09:00 to 13:00. The entry fee is € 24.50 per person.
To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Theatre Orpheus will hold the Taste Festival (‘Smaakfest’) on 15 and 16 March. Visitors will have the opportunity to try foods and drinks by local producers as well as watch fun live performances by various artists throughout the weekend.
Royal Light Festival
From 12 to 16 March, the third edition of the Royal Light Festival will showcase stunning light artworks from around the world, celebrating 80 years of freedom. The 3-kilometre route passes through iconic sites like Paleis Het Loo and Grote Kerk, highlighting a celebration of liberation and solidarity.
Apenheul is back!
After being closed for winter, Apeldoorn’s famous zoo, Apenheul, will reopen on 21 March. This is a unique chance to meet over 300 primates of 33 species, with more than half of them roaming freely among the visitors! Tickets can be purchased on Apenheul’s website.
Exhibitions at CODA
One of the CODA Museum’s highlights in March is the exhibition ‘055: Apeldoorn Art’, featuring works submitted by artists living or working in Apeldoorn. The exhibition covers a wide range of subjects and themes, showcasing a great variety of materials, forms and techniques.
Focusing on themes such as migration, displacement, cultural memory, feminism and the formation of identity, the photo series ‘Between These Folded Walls, Utopia’ features portraits of young women, aged 17 to 24, who have been uprooted and displaced for various reasons. The works were created by Sarah Cooper (b. 1974, United States) and Nina Gorfer (b. 1979, Austria). Tickets can be purchased on CODA’s website or at the museum’s ticket office.

On 1 March, starting at 20:00, Gigant will host the popular travelling party 80's Verantwoord, featuring hits from Talking Heads, Queen, Blondie, The Cure, David Bowie, Madonna, and many more. This is a special edition celebrating the event’s 25th anniversary. Tickets are available on 80’s Verantwoord’s website.
Retro music is also the theme of the Echoes of the 60's (&50's) concert by The Bentleys, taking place at Theatre Orpheus on 14 March at 20:00.
For those who prefer electronic music, the Abnoormal ‘In De Kerk’ event will bring styles such as house, tech-house, techno and industrial techno to Apeldoorn’s Grote Kerk on 7 and 8 March.

A big-screen celebration of athletics
