Bi-annual Student Debate at the Amsterdam Campus

Bi-annual Student Debate at the Amsterdam Campus

On Wednesday, 16 March, Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences will host a bi-annual debate with American students from the IES study abroad programme in Amsterdam. The debate will take place at the Amsterdam campus from 09:30-12:00. All Wittenborg students are welcome to join. This year, the subject of the debate is "Fair-trade Coffee: Scalable Solution or Temporary Fix?"

Participants will be given a variety of articles to read in preparation. During the debate, students will be divided into teams that will represent various stakeholder positions, such as social entrepreneurs, NGOs, farmers, national governments, corporations and the Fair-trade foundation. The teams will have 30 minutes to brainstorm and work together to answer a variety of questions pertaining to:

  • Global commodity chains
  • Climate change
  • Roles and responsibilities of international stakeholders, including Western consumers
  • Labour practices in the developing world

This is a good opportunity for Wittenborg students to meet and network with other international students in Amsterdam. At the end of the debate, there will be time to socialise and enjoy some Fair-trade refreshments.

Students who would like to participate should send an e-mail to amy.abdou@wittenborg.eu before 9 March.
