Apeldoorn hosts third Zero Waste Week

Reducing waste to save planet earth

Apeldoorn is gearing up for the third edition of Zero Waste week, organised by Zero Waste Apeldoorn. From 10 to 16 September, Zero Waste Apeldoorn is offering free workshops, outings, exhibitions and lectures on climate neutral production and getting your carbon footprint under control. Each day is dedicated to a different theme that revolves around finding creative ways to reduce your waste. The themes can range from spotlighting local heroes to Clean-up Days or a "Do-it-yourself Day”. Zero Waste Apeldoorn is an important initiative for the city of Apeldoorn, known for its green character and location in the midst of nature. The festival is centered around several days of various activities.

The start of Zero Waste Week Apeldoorn 2023 will be held at the NewTechPark with a speech by Alderman Danny Huizer, followed by an eco-friendly festival. That includes a wide range of activities, including a Slow Fashion Show consisting of two segments, various performances, bite-sized workshops, informative lectures, booths brimming with inspiration and information, a sustainable market with the finest eco-conscious products and a delectable array of no-waste refreshments. Participants in this festival are from various thrift shops and generous stores that want to contribute to saving the planet and reducing waste in the Netherlands, such as Terre des Hommes, 055 Fashion and Stichting da Capo.

On the second day of the event, you will have the chance to explore different companies and possible alternatives to achieve more climate-neutral production methods. Called the "Business Day," this day offers the opportunity to delve into sustainable business practices, countering greenwashing, hosting eco-friendly festivals and the shift from disposable to reusable options through tours and webinars.

Day 3 revolves around the principles of the sharing economy, circularity, second-hand goods, reusability and minimalism. During this event, participants will gain insight into the possibilities of reusing items, the positive impact on the environment and the enjoyable experience of sharing with each other, giving vintage items a new life. Activities for the day include exploring mini libraries, thrift stores and second-hand clothing stores in Apeldoorn. The day will conclude with a clothing swap fair at the Foenix intake point.

On day 4, known as Food Day, we delve into topics such as sustainable eating and drinking, packaging-free shopping and food waste. There are workshops to learn how to make vegan chocolates, a zero waste tour of the city and you can visit the organic market.

On Green Friday, the focus shifts to topics such as biodiversity, sustainable land and water management, growing vegetable and picking gardens and exploring vegan food options. You can buy used gardening tools at Phoenix in Apeldoorn, partake of a vegetarian tasting at Dille & Kamille and take a moment to visit the organic city gardens of Stadsakkers.

Zero Waste Week concludes with World Clean Up Day. A day when people around the world clean up their streets and cities to strive for a cleaner planet. It is also a fitting conclusion to Zero Waste Week, because when you host a party you shouldn't leave your trash behind. Therefore, everyone in Apeldoorn and Loenen cleans up all the litter and trash in their neighborhoods. Several events are planned to clean up, such as a Clean-up Run, a Clean-up Walk and you can even get in a boat that sails through the waters of Apeldoorn and Loenen to tackle all the litter in the waterways.

Feel free to join Zero Waste Week in Apeldoorn, which begins 10 September 2023. For more information, check out their website here.
