"Exposure is the greatest educator"

Keletso Kagiso Pooe, a recent MBM (MSc) Sport Business graduate from Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, is a passionate sports enthusiast on a quest to apply his knowledge of the sporting world. Hailing from Pretoria, South Africa, Keletso's journey has taken him from being a personal trainer to teaching English in China before pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Sport Management back in his home country. Inspired by his Dutch girlfriend, he decided to make the move to the Netherlands to continue his studies in the field of sports.

Reflecting on his time as a student, Keletso shared that his most impactful experience was, "Being a student representative for master's students. Conversations were had with staff and students regarding the quality of the courses we were taking, mental health support, the cultural differences and understanding of all international students and entertainment options for students who were staying in the school's facilities. All of which played a massive role in enhancing the welfare of all students."

When it comes to his approach to life, Keletso described himself as a combination of both organised and freelance. He explained, "I always strive to be prepared for major events in my life, but I also embrace the chaos when it erupts because chaos keeps life interesting."

For his thesis, Keletso focused on climate change vulnerability within the sporting industry, specifically analysing the impacts on Eredivisie football clubs in the 2022/2023 season. Explaining the relevance of his study, he said, "This study is relevant because the world is changing rapidly due to global warming and climate change and the sport world will not be left unscathed. Essentially, this paper was intended to raise awareness regarding climate change, and at the same time, maintain the integrity of sport."

When the time came to present his thesis, Keletso admitted to feeling nervous. He said, "I enjoy presenting and so preparing for my presentation went smoothly. I guess the anticipation of all the questions to be asked about my paper, as well as the finality of the occasion raised my heart rate a bit because I really wanted to do well."

Looking ahead, Keletso expressed his desire to secure a sport consultancy job, particularly within the sport programmes of Dutch municipalities. He explained, "Many municipalities in the Netherlands have sport programmes to help their residents become more active and/or sustain sporting or exercising behaviours. I want to be a part of a team that aids in sharing sport and exercise expertise for the promotion of general activity as well as guarding against physical and mental health risks in a fun and inclusive manner."

Keletso firmly believes that exposure is the greatest educator. With his passion for sports and his determination to make a positive impact in the field, he continues to pursue opportunities to expand his knowledge and contribute to the promotion of a healthier and more active society.
